The ᴅᴇʟɪᴠᴇʀʏ Hero Helping Woman Give Birth During Rounds
A ᴅᴇʟɪᴠᴇʀʏ man truly lived up to his job title when he suddenly found himself having to help a woman give birth during his rounds.
Perry Ryan, 29, was out dropping packages off to Hermes customers in Portsmouth, when he ʜᴇᴀʀᴅ sᴄʀᴇᴇᴄʜɪɴɢ ᴡʜɪᴄʜ sᴏᴜɴᴅᴇᴅ ‘ʟɪᴋᴇ sᴏᴍᴇᴏɴᴇ ᴡᴀs ʙᴇɪɴɢ ᴍᴜʀᴅᴇʀᴇᴅ’. It turned out that neighbour Bakhan Shoker’s waters had ʙʀᴏᴋᴇɴ and she had gone into labour in the hallway by the front door while her husband was out.
Quick-thinking Mr Ryan phoned 999 and tried to comfort the woman before relaying the ᴘᴀʀᴀᴍᴇᴅɪᴄs’ ɪɴsᴛʀᴜᴄᴛɪᴏɴs over the phone when her partner came back just in time for baby Bella’s arrival. He passed on directions on how to keep the baby’s airways clear, ensure the infant was ᴡᴀʀᴍᴇᴅ ᴡɪᴛʜ ᴀ ᴛᴏᴡᴇʟ ᴀɴᴅ ʜᴀᴅ sᴋɪɴ-ᴛᴏ-sᴋɪɴ ᴄᴏɴᴛᴀᴄᴛ ᴡɪᴛʜ ᴛʜᴇ ᴍᴜᴍ.

Mrs Shoker’s husband, Schar, told Portsmouth News he had only popped to the shops and quickly ʀᴜsʜᴇᴅ ʙᴀᴄᴋ ᴀFᴛᴇʀ ʀᴇᴄᴇɪᴠɪɴɢ ᴀ Fʀᴀɴᴛɪᴄ call about what was happening.
He said: ‘When I got home I recognised (Mr Ryan). He usually delivers quite a lot of stuff from Ebay and Amazon to us.’
The new dad added: ‘Perry was very helpful – what he did was so good. He called 999 and spoke to the operator. He did such a good thing and I really appreciate it. He couldn’t come in because the door was locked but it was good for me to know someone was behind the door. It was good timing for him to be there.’
Mr Ryan said: ‘It was a good job I was there otherwise he might have sᴛʀᴜɢɢʟᴇᴅ on his own. The midwife on the phone was brilliant too. I think they found it funny. It all happened so quickly. I’m just glad the baby was in good health. I don’t know what would have happened if things had started to go ᴡʀᴏɴɢ – neither of us had a clue what we were doing.’
The newborn was safely delivered and taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital with her parents.
