I ‘m A Real Miracle Baby
A baby who was ᴅɪᴀɢɴᴏsᴇᴅ with ᴄᴀɴᴄᴇʀ before she was even born has sᴜʀᴠɪᴠᴇᴅ ᴀ ᴅᴀɴɢᴇʀᴏᴜs ᴏᴘᴇʀᴀᴛɪᴏɴ ᴀɴᴅ ᴀ ɢʀᴜᴇʟʟɪɴɢ ʀᴏᴜɴᴅ ᴏF ᴄʜᴇᴍᴏᴛʜᴇʀᴀᴘʏ, ᴀɴᴅ ʜᴀs ʙᴇᴀᴛᴇɴ ᴛʜᴇ ᴅɪsᴇᴀsᴇ.
Doctors sᴘᴏᴛᴛᴇᴅ ᴀ ᴛᴇɴɴɪs ʙᴀʟʟ sɪᴢᴇᴅ ᴛᴜᴍᴏᴜr on Jenna Smith’s neck when her mother was 32 weeks pregnant and ᴏᴘᴇʀᴀᴛᴇᴅ ᴛᴏ ʀᴇᴍᴏᴠᴇ ɪᴛ days after she was born. Now enjoying her first Christmas, the baby’s ᴄᴀɴᴄᴇʀ is finally in ʀᴇᴍɪssɪᴏɴ Fᴏʟʟᴏᴡɪɴɢ ᴡᴇᴇᴋs ᴏF ᴄʜᴇᴍᴏᴛʜᴇʀᴀᴘʏ.
Her mother Lisa, 38, who lives in Penrith with husband Anthony, 38, said: ‘Iᴛ ᴡᴀs sᴜᴄʜ ᴀ ᴍᴀssɪᴠᴇ sʜᴏᴄᴋ ᴛᴏ ᴜs ʙᴏᴛʜ when we were told that Jenna had this neck ᴄᴀɴᴄᴇʀ. She was still inside me and hadn’t even been born yet, yet I was being told that my baby had ᴄᴀɴᴄᴇʀ. It was ᴛᴇʀʀɪFʏɪɴɢ. When I saw the ᴍᴀssɪᴠᴇ ᴛᴜᴍᴏᴜʀ on her neck when she was delivered, I couldn’t believe just how big it was. She was such a tiny baby and yet she had this ᴍᴀssɪᴠᴇ ᴛᴜᴍᴏᴜʀ on her neck. I just had to pray that she would be able to sᴜʀᴠɪᴠᴇ.’
Mrs Smith, 38, sᴜFFᴇʀᴇᴅ ᴀ ʜᴇᴀʀᴛʙʀᴇᴀᴋɪɴɢ ᴍɪsᴄᴀʀʀɪᴀɢᴇ two years before becoming pregnant with Jenna but her joy soon turned to ᴛᴇʀʀᴏʀ. I was overjoyed that I was pregnant again,’ remembers Mrs Smith. I went for my scan at 12 weeks and doctors said there was a good sᴛʀᴏɴɢ ʜᴇᴀʀᴛʙᴇᴀᴛ that that was a relief. Then on the 20 week scan everything looked fine too so I was just looking forward to becoming a mum at last.’
After developing ᴅɪᴀʙᴇᴛᴇs during the pregnancy, Mrs Smith had another scan at 32 weeks to make sure her daughter was developing normally – but was ʜᴏʀʀɪFɪᴇᴅ when doctors sᴘᴏᴛᴛᴇᴅ ᴛʜᴇ ᴛᴜᴍᴏᴜʀ. ‘I was overjoyed that I was pregnant again,’ remembers Mrs Smith.
After her birth, the tiny baby was taken straight to the ɪɴᴛᴇɴsɪᴠᴇ ᴄᴀʀᴇ ᴜɴɪᴛ. She had an ᴏᴘᴇʀᴀᴛɪᴏɴ ᴛᴏ ʀᴇᴍᴏᴠᴇ ᴛʜᴇ ᴛᴜᴍᴏᴜʀ ᴀɴᴅ ɪɴɪᴛɪᴀʟʟʏ ᴛᴇsᴛs ᴄᴀᴍᴇ ʙᴀᴄᴋ sʜᴏᴡɪɴɢ that it was benign. ‘We were so relieved at first because we were told it wasn’t ᴄᴀɴᴄᴇʀ, We thought we could just take her home and get on with our lives and put all this behind us’.says Mrs Smith. ‘
But a few weeks later, the couple got a call from the hospital to say that Fᴜʀᴛʜᴇʀ ᴛᴇsᴛs ʜᴀᴅ sʜᴏᴡɴ ᴛʜᴀᴛ ᴛʜᴇ ᴛᴜᴍᴏᴜʀ was ᴄᴀɴᴄᴇʀous.
Jenna, who is now nine months old, had to be taken back into hospital to begin months of ɢʀᴜᴇʟʟɪɴɢ ᴄʜᴇᴍᴏᴛʜᴇʀᴀᴘʏ ᴛʀᴇᴀᴛᴍᴇɴᴛ ᴛᴏ sᴛᴏᴘ ᴛʜᴇ ᴄᴀɴᴄᴇʀ sᴘʀᴇᴀᴅɪɴɢ. She has sᴄᴀɴs once a month at the hospital to ᴄʜᴇᴄᴋ ʜᴇʀ ᴘʀᴏɢʀᴇss.
‘She has been ᴛɪʀᴇᴅ ᴀɴᴅ ᴇxʜᴀᴜsᴛᴇᴅ with the ᴄʜᴇᴍᴏᴛʜᴇʀᴀᴘʏ ᴛʀᴇᴀᴛᴍᴇɴᴛ. But in-between her ᴄʜᴇᴍᴏᴛʜᴇʀᴀᴘʏ she is still a happy and smiling baby. Says her motherWith just two more weeks of ᴄʜᴇᴍᴏᴛʜᴇʀᴀᴘʏ ᴛʀᴇᴀᴛᴍᴇɴᴛ to go, the future looks brighter and there is no sign of the ᴛᴜᴍᴏᴜʀ ʀᴇᴛᴜʀɴɪɴɢ.
’We are very proud of her. Luckily when she grows up, she will be too young to remember everything that she has been through. We will tell her when she’s old enough about how lucky she has been – to sᴜʀᴠɪᴠᴇ being born with ᴄᴀɴᴄᴇʀ.’added Mrs Smith.
